Read the map before dropping a pin

โ† All geography guides

A practical way to narrow a geography guess using coastlines, scale and nearby cities.

Start with a region

Before hunting for a city, decide what the clue actually gives you. A named country is a useful starting boundary. A language, landscape or familiar event may suggest a region, but it is a possibility to check rather than proof. Move the map to that region and keep enough surrounding land visible to recognize its shape.

Use coastlines as landmarks

Look for a peninsula, an island chain or a bend in a coastline. These shapes can help you orient yourself when labels are sparse. If you think the place is inland, compare its position with the coast and neighboring cities. A city beside a bay and a city far inland may share a similar name; their surroundings help you tell them apart.

Zoom in stages

Zoom from region to country, then from country to city. Jumping straight to a close view can hide the context you need. The map shows different city labels as you zoom. If the city you want is missing, adjust the zoom or move slightly; a missing label does not establish that a place is absent.

Check the pin before submitting

Turn on Confirm location before locking in when you want to inspect your choice first. Place the pin, check the selected area, then lock it in. A label selects a city's map position, not a particular stadium or building. GeoArcade generally asks for a city or town, and nearby guesses earn more points.

Learn from the reveal

After an answer, compare your pin with the revealed place. Was your guess in the right country but on the wrong coast? Did you confuse two similarly named cities? Read the explanation and follow its source if you want more context. One clear observation is more useful for your next round than trying to memorize every label.
